Now what I find odd, disturbing, slightly frustrating, and confusing is that it appears that the X7 is the only model that receives these new lighting effects free of charge! The same welcome lighting effects are currently a $50 upgrade in the 7 series (incl. i7) - even with its most recent iDrive 8.5 update. That said, I was only able to find a description about the new lighting settings/features via the connected drive store..... mannn I don't even know what is going on anymore lol

Played with welcome lights new settings. They change not only taillights behaviour but also daytime running lights (at least in my "Swarovski crystal" daylight case).
