X7 Steering Wheel noise
Hey guys! New to the forum and just purchased my second BMW last year. 2021 X7 this time, and it’s great. I cleared 50,000 miles right before Christmas (see ya warranty), and last week the steering wheel started making a sweeping or running noise whenever I turn the wheel left or right. It’s a noticeable sound. I don’t see anything obvious rubbing and the steering is as tight as brand new. It’s goes to the shop next week, and they mentioned rack and pinion over the phone, but I think the steering is too tight for it to be that. I wanted to get the thoughts of the forum before visiting my local Indy (who is great), just so I can do some research going into it.
Not sure if I can share a YouTube vid here, but here’s the issue https://youtu.be/rWxT0zyteYs?si=9RCgEMRV0PcKMzag |

Quick follow up on this to report what the issue was. The sweeping sound was caused by a fault in the steering rack. BMW service repaired the issue but didn’t report on an exact component failure. I asked, but they didn’t know. Full steering rack replacement along with a thrust rod - $9,700. Oof…..

I have this same issue when the weather is hot and the steering wheel telescopes out when the car starts. I applied some WD-40 and it was good for a few weeks but the noise came back. Did this turn into any serious issue for you? Or were you able to fix it?

I think this is a different issue and I actually have it. Took my car to a dealer a couple times to address it. Both times they lubricated the telescoping mechanism. The issue isn't completely gone but is much less noticeable now.

Sadly, the dealership said that the subframe damage was from a collision, likely from a pothole = warranty wouldn’t cover it. I ended up filing a claim with my insurance. Good news….only had to pay a $500 deductible. Bad news, the renewal for my car insurance came last week…..up $1,500 a year due to the claim.

also if it's a pothole, wouldn't that be liability? it would not be a claim that is at fault for you . isn't it? |
