2020 vs 2021 40i

Hi all,

Looking at used X7’s and ideally finding 2020’s and 2021’s in the price and feature sets that I’m looking for. The main difference is the mild hybrid with improved ASS. Finding models with 25-45k miles.

If I opted for the 2020, I’d code off ASS. I test drove a 2021 and the ASS was smooth enough for me.

If you could choose, which would you prefer? I’d think that 2020 still had some problems/kinks being the second model year while the 2021 had minor growing pains the the 48v system.

I plan to get an extended service contract until 100k so I’m not overly worried about repairs other than the downtime and frustration it brings.

Would you prefer the mild hybrid? I’m coming from a Tesla Model Y so the vehicle being off at a standstill gives a similar vibe.

For what its worth, my 2020 has just under 50K miles on it. I just got it back from the dealer for an issue with the skylight sunshade and some wind noise. While there they found the water pump had a slight leak. All was replaced/repaired under factory warranty. No other issues with the car. The tech hasn't had any problems.

I can add to this. My 2020 X7 has 55K miles and has had only 3 minor issues early on within the 2nd year of ownership. All fixed under warranty. Otherwise it's been rock solid. I would not buy an X7 with the mild hybrid engine. Keep reading on this forum and elsewhere on issues people have had and are still having with the mild hybrid engines in these vehicles.

If I were in the market today for a used X7 I would only be shopping for the 2020/2021 vehicles WITHOUT the mild hybrid engine. I believe there were some 2021's that didn't have the mild hybrid engine if my memory serves me correctly but don't quote me on that.

Thanks for the feedback. My thoughts are that I would get a warranty to cover the “life” of the vehicle with me (5y). Then trade it in for another down the road.

I’ll have to take some test drives of both to get an idea. Seems like the 48v system can be hit and miss on reliability but still barely any negatives overall.

Any other feedback from the group?

The 48v system is definitely a step down in reliability. That said, if you own the car long enough you're likely to make up for the repair costs given the additional MPG.

The lithium battery for the 48v system also needs to be replaced every 3-5 years and is expensive.

I would get the 2020 without the 48v.

Pretty sure in California that is covered under emissions warranty for 8 years. If that’s the case, failing at Year 9 could happen. If it fails before then, and it’s proved to be the battery, it should be covered.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong.

I am actively engaged in purchasing someone’s 2021 on the private market for a fair price. Once secured, I’ll post details with my excitement.

Minimal research says car bought in California maintains 10y/150k warranty on the mild hybrid system as it is considered emissions equipment.

Future viewers of this thread: an important difference between 20/21 models is the ability to have the digital key on iPhone. Coming from a Tesla, this was important to me.

While I still have to tap the phone on handle or position it on the pad to start, it saves me from needing the key regularly.

I have nearly 60k miles on my 21 540i. Never had an issue with 48v system. There were a few hiccups/warnings early on but subsequent software fixed them all.

Have a 2021 X7 40i. No issues. Bought it CPO, have had it 18 months. It has 26k miles. About half the miles or more are from us.

Actually looking to sell it or trade it because my wife wants an M50. Probably will buy another 2021 or a 2022. She doesn’t like the LCI (no offense to those with LCI).

Do the 20 models come with the key card or only 21 and above?

Every model year comes with key card. 21 and newer can use iphone as key.

If you are buying used, you may not get the key card from the seller. You can go and buy a new key card from local dealer parts dept.
