BMW code names

Hi all. I joined this forum about 18 months ago, alongside the purchase of my first BMW - a CPO 2021 X7 M50i. I have learned a lot from reading the posts. As a BMW newbie, I am sometimes confused by the E, F, G codes that are used when referring to the various vehicle models, as well as the N and S codes used when referring to various engines. I decided to do a little google searching to learn more. From my readings, I believe the following is correct. Can you confirm?

- Each BMW historically carried an E project number – standing for Entwicklung, or development. The numbers rose progressively up to triple digits, at which point F numbers took over, and then G numbers eventually took over.
- E53 = 1st-gen X5, 2000-2006
- E70 = 2nd-gen X5, 2007-2013
- F15 = 3rd-gen X5 2014-2017
- F85 = X5 M, 2015-
- G05 = 4th-gen X5, 2018-present
- G07 = X7, 2019-present
- G09 = XM, 2022-present

- BMW B58 = turbocharged straight-six engine, which began production in 2015. Used in X5 40i and X7 40i.
- BMW N63 = twin-turbocharged petrol V8 engine, in production from 2008-present. 2020-2023; G05 X5 M50i, 2020-2022; G07 X7 M50i
- BMW S63 = BMW M version of the N63, which debuted in the BMW X6 M and was used in the BMW M5 models from 2011 to 2023.
- BMW S68 = twin-turbocharged V8 engine, first use was in the 2022 revised BMW X7 as the M60i.

Pretty much correct. The f95 is the g05 X5 version of the X5M.

F85 X5M - F15 X5

2024 X7:
  • B58 - X7 xDrive40i is powered by a 375-hp turbocharged inline-six-cylinder
  • S68 - M60i has a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 that makes 523 horses
  • N63 - Alpina XB7 has a specially tuned version of that V-8, which develops 630 horsepower

Pre LCI and LCI X7 models:

I'm petty sure the LCI G07 XB7 uses the S68 too....the plumbing on my engine sure looks like the S68...rated at 631 ponies.

lloyd99 , don't forget that most BMW chassis and drive trains undergo a mid-cycle change called LCI....but, not all BMWs have an LCI variante.

You can also look up part numbers by chassis and engine code, along side LCI, at realOEM.com.

…thanks for the additional info about the LCI XB7…you’re correct, it got a tweaked S68 that upped the ponies as you stated:
The XB7 continues to use a tuned version of the twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 found in the X7 M60i, but while the pre-facelift XB7 made 613 horsepower, the new version boosts that to 631 ponies. Torque stays the same at 590 pound-feet—a 37 pound-foot advantage over the M60i—and BMW says the torque peak arrives 200 rpm earlier, at 1800 rpm, and lasts until 5600 rpm.
