Rear Entertainment System Retrofit

Hey Guys

Anyone have experience or knowledge of buying the parts and adding it to a 2021 X7 since its not available to order. I have one on order and coming in October and trying to figure out how to get one in car that plays DVDs. What sucks is they took out the CD/DVD drive in the front so even with coding it will only work with USB. My kids have a lot of DVDs and I need it for long trips and don't want to deal with transferring to USB.

Any input would be great and help out tremendously.

Thanks.

It can’t be. The new RES is too complicated for a retrofit. I have been on both sides of the fence with this one. This time I made sure my X7 would have the new touch screen RES as it’s so much more than a DVD player. That said, what I did with my 2019 X5 without RES was to get the rear tables and use iPads. Cost wise you could buy 2 android tablets and use the oem tablet holders if you want them locked to the back of the seats. They look pretty oem when installed as they plug in right behind the tablet so you see no cords. It’s a bandaid fix but might solve your issue. We streamed everything from Disney+ to Hulu with the tablet retrofit. DVD’s might be too much trouble unfortunately.

Great info, thanks. I presume you have the folding table system? I have never seen this but does it have rubber surface so tablets don't slide around?

I did in my 2019 X5. I have since traded it in for a loaded X7 M50i with RES. The rear table system is great to have in general if you have kids. The surface is a textured plastic but you could easily attach non-slip pads on it. My kids loved the fold down tables to set their tablet on and work on. BMW makes a actual tablet holder for the same travel system that might work better for rigging up a rear screen system that stays in place.

The entire travel system that attaches to the back of the seats are modular and a slick idea.

Another idea... I put in two 12" screens which have an HDMI input. This one also has an LED light below to match the interior color (multiple colors to choose from).

Thanks for the advice. Do you just connect it to headrest. How do you get power to it?

@SkyRider - Purchased from a seller in China, will look for details. PM me as a reminder. Monitors are 12.5", 4K and have a USB and HMDI in. I purchased a small 64GB USB key and have shows loaded. Being an Android based monitor, you can install all Android apps and mirror your phone.

@E92MPower - Seeing as headrest has the gap for the travel and comfort system, I used the headrest brackets to clamp onto the headrest poles. As for power, removed the rear cupholder and tapped into the 12V output from the wires, leaving the outlet available if needed. This voltage output is timed for 8 to 10 min so shuts off to avoid battery drain.

Any other questions, let me know.

I got 2 of these trays from BMW. Unfortunately, it seems to be sticking out too much from the travel attachment and may be sitting too low for my kids. It didn't come up with headrest hardware. Do you normally keep it off and only use it while traveling?

I folded it back and left it attached to the seat. They looked like tv’s in this position.

Thanks, nynd. Curious what floor mats you have in the pic there? Appear to be non-standard.

Ordered them from a vendor but only rear seats came in. Will see how they hold up. Better coverage on sides and center area as I have captains seats. I have OEM rubber ones as well so will use those in harsh winter months.

Yeah, they do look to have larger area coverage. They look like quilted pads?

Correct - yes, quilted and give a more elegant feel inside, quilting sort of matching the diamond pattern on the seats.

Can you provide pictures of how it is installed?

For installing those screens, I just tapped into the 12V power outlet from within the console cover on the floor. This way, the powerpoint is still available and the screens don't draw that much and all wires are out of sight running behind the seat cover. Sorry, no additional pics.
