I agree with Aussiefishy, if someone's earned their money, it's their decision how to spend it. It may not make sense to some of us, but who are we to judge. These people are actually helping us out by keeping M5 production volumes up which ultimately keeps prices at a lower level.

The phenomenon of buying the "top of the line" just because it's perceived to be the best isn't limited to high performance cars. As my sig says, I also follow the Jeep world. Bought a wrangler as a weekend family fun car for tooling around town with the top and doors off. Since I'm using it mostly on road, I got a Willys edition, which is basically the base sport model with some added cosmetic features and slightly better gearing. I see soccer moms driving the top of the line Rubicon Hard Rock ($12 to $14 grand more) all the time, and I'm pretty sure they're not rock crawling to take advantage of the electronic sway bar disconnects and locking differentials.
