There is no right way, it just depends on how picky you are and how much money you want to spend.
A minimalist approach is to clay it and then use a high quality synthetic sealant (e.g., Sonax PNS, Zanio, many others). This will provide durable protection with minimal cost, time and effort. If you are not sure if you need to clay, put your hand in a plastic bag and run it over the surface of the car. If it feels gritty, you should clay.
