I just traded in my x5 50i and opted for the x7 in 40i version. I think it has plenty of power. It makes a lot of torque down low, so you do not have to rev it out to get good acceleration. I live in the mountains and it goes up and down steep grades at 80 mph with ease. It may drop down one gear here and there vs the V8 but not that big of deal. I loved the V8, but since I bought the x7 mainly to travel in, I figured why not get the 40i that gets better gas mileage, can go farther on a tank of gas, and costs less. The inline six is the smoothest engine ever. I'll always love the V8, but imho the 6cyl is more than adequate. The v8 is a beast though and if you have any doubts and dont care about the price difference and gas mileage get it.
