I downloaded it on the BMW app first, then connected it to the car via Bluetooth and WiFi. The WiFi only worked properly when I disabled CarPlay on my phone or else the CarPlay connection would disconnect the car WiFi. After WiFi was connected, the transfer from app to car didn’t take that long, maybe 15 minutes? Just make sure to leave the app open.
If it’s downloading super slowly, then it’s probably downloading through the car’s cellular connection. If you don’t have an eSIM setup, then it takes a long time to download.
