Going from your phone to the car does not need your presence, other than leaving your phone in the car. But I still like to be in the car when this data transfer is taking place. However, when the car actually installs the upgrade, I would recommend you stay in the car to watch the upgrade process in case something weird happens. Even though technically you could leave your key in the car and walk away during the upgrade.

Call me old school, but whenever I do any type of software update - computer, phone, and now the car - I prefer to be present to watch the whole process.

Next thing to keep handy is how to manually put the car in neutral if the upgrade goes "worse case" bad and you need a tow to the dealer. Not hard if you know what to do (is essentially a screw on the side of the transmission oil pan) but I will speculate most if not all tow trucks/flat beds don't know this. Hell, for my last two OTA updates, I "strategically" parked in my driveway so a flat bed would have easy access to tow my X7 if necessary....
