Quite a dilema you've got there Stewbert... Are the '04 X5s any better as far as the X Drive system? If the winter performance isn't satisfactory now, why get another just like it? Maybe something more utilitarian. I would suggest considering a 5 Series wagon with X Drive, but you might not want to use that to haul stuff, and it's ground clearance won't be as high.
