There's another thread here somewhere that talks all about this. I believe it's by default so the driver can see what was behind them even if they pull forward. Especially after backing over/into something. If they pull forward they get a wider/longer view of area behind them.

I don't like it but the workaround for me is to press the camera button to the left of the gear shift. That brings up a separate, smaller screen that shows an Aerial 3D photo of your vehicle so you can see everything around you.

I'm on 07/2019.59 iDrive I believe. I've also reset iDrive multiple times. It still does it.
I should have been clear - it’s a coded option on other BMWs like two of my previous X6s but it looks like they changed the way the camera works on X7.
