This is BMW saying "fuck all y'all" the way they did with E65. It was an ugly car whose design breakthroughs were later adopted by many other manufacturers in milder, more palatable forms.
Three years from now what you see as ugly will be considered modern.
On a less controversial note: have you noticed the new cockpit? It'll come next year not just in the X7, but also in X5, 8, and even 3. And I'll be surprised if 7 doesn't get it at LCI in early '19.
