I guess it depends how particular you are with your vehicle, if you intend to apply the (permanent) coating yourself. If the vehicle is not properly washed/decontaminated/polished to remove all previous tar/fallout/washed-induced swirls then all you're doing is locking all those defects under the coating, for everyone to see.

The vehicle should be properly detailed before applying any kind of coating. Most people don't realize how good their car can look after being cleaned by a professional, coming straight off the showroom floor is not the best a vehicle can look, I promise.
