I've done both with the app as well pressing the lock button on the keys to start, neither case required a pin or anything. Wasn't even aware of this pin thing until you guys mentioned it here.
Also, the 2nd key is not in use, the tag never even came off of it as I'm the sole driver of the x7. However I have set it up with the wife's profile but it remained hung for the past 6 months.
So here's another scary thought. After picking up my car today, I decided to see what it would do if I press the start button without applying the brakes, the car shutdown. I have a thread here that reported about my brakes didn't engage after I put it into gear. I wonder if this is all related somehow.
