Here is the good news. If your phone's phonebook transfers to the car, and the names are reasonably easy for a computer to pronounce, you should be able to dial by name by saying the text name phonetically. For example if you have an entry for "John Smith", just speak "dial john smith". It should find the entry and ask for confirmation, then you speak "yes" if it got the right one.
As has been said before... unfortunately there should be a second address list, maintained in the car's phone electronics as opposed to the sim card, which is voice entered and voice recalled. Thus names with ambiguous pronunciations like "Ian" can be recognized. I have also reported this via dealer to BMW, but no response yet.
