The classes used today in racing are perhaps too disparate to be covered by a single car. The GTE/GT3 class is now so far removed from an actual car you can buy, as to render it almost meaningless. Effectively silhouette racers. The 911 is mid-engine, that is a huge change.

So for example Porsche decided to build a silhouette car with the engine in a different location for the GT3/GTE class, and use a more recognizable 911 for the GT4 class. You could say that Porsche is covering those classes with the same car but that would be wildly inaccurate. They are covering them with the same nameplate.

BMW is covering those classes with 2 different cars, and nameplates: the M8 and the M4 - no doubt thinking each one is better suited for its category.

Right or wrong? Not sure this question is meaningful anymore. Just watch the spectacle.

In any case if you want to feel a sense of pride in your daily driver, look at the GT4 class results, not at the GTE.
