I also prefer to play my music seperate than my iPhone.
On my iPod it works just fine. Get so,ethi g called the Y cable I got mine through Amazon for like $13 you plug it into the AUX and input in the armrest console and you can control it through the cars iDrive system.
Album art and artist and song title is also displayed, you can pick playlists and everything from the iPod same as when you are using it with headphones sound quaitly is great no issues there
