Same thing here on both iPhone and iPod Touch (and an old iPod Classic, too, that I tried for good measure).
Other than the ancient iPod, I'm also unable to navigate through music using the scroll wheel on the steering wheel or with the iDrive wheel. It just says "Please wait." It will work on smaller playlists.
There are also issues with music playback from a USB drive--it doesn't see a lot of the content, even though it is there and accessible.
Hopefully this will all be fixed soon. I'm told by a German friend who was home for the holidays and is friends with a number of BMW execs, including the head of global quality, that they are well aware of these issues and a fix should be deployed around 1/7/19. The software update I got last week did nothing to fix any of this, but did nuke all my BMW apps....
