You are retired. Why the heck are you hurrying home?
For example, after Hoover Dam, you could swing by Zion and/or go to Grand Canyon. Staying off the Interstates and not being in a hurry is a good thing if you have the time.
My wife and I picked up her G05 at Spartanburg and drove it back to California where we life. It took 6 weeks!
