On diesels the hardware is the same, there can be slight differences in the mapping, and the Steinbauer is adjustable whereas the ACS unit is not, but other than that yes, the main difference is the warranty. For most petrol engines ACS use an entirely different system with no Steinbauer components.

ACS comes with 2 year warranty (from first reg, extendable to 3 years) to cover the engine and drivetrain for any tuning-related faults. Other than that the engine and the rest of the car is covered by BMW as usual.

With Steinbauer there is no cover for tuning-related faults, but BMW should still cover the engine for anything else, and the rest of the car as usual.
