You have to be somewhat realistic here. How is a 6 pot going to be lighter than a 4 pot? The numbers just don't add up. An e36 M3 was not lighter than a 318i. Nor was an e46 M3 lighter than a 320i.

Personally, I think it's so cliche to say M is for marketing. While I'm not in a hurry to dump my e92 for a newer supposedly better M3/4, I'll gladly admit that there are things they've made giant improvements on. So IMHO, M is well and alive.

I know we've talked about this in the past, but I still really think you should test drive an M235i. I know you'll think it's a fat bastard, but at the same time, that's going to be the basis of an M2. If you really hate it that bad, you might as well cross the M2 off your list. It's not like the e30 M3 is going to be a starting point for the M2, my 2 cents.
