Maybe you didnt drive enough before your smog... You need to make sure you car is fully warm and for all the sensors to function correctly. If you have a sniffer test you need your cats warm which means 30mins of driving first. Its also possible that the smog guy accidentally hit your cruise control or touched it on purpose (because he didnt know what it was??) If that was to happen it would reset everything and your forced to drive another 70+ miles.

This probably didn't happen and there is a real small chance it could, but you never know. People do like to press buttons in cars they dont normally see lol. If you dont want to remove it you can also disable the steering wheel controls from what i've heard.
