There is no 'normal' way for you to find out which software version you have, by 'tinkering' with the car yourself.
Your dealer will be able to tell you, based on the VIN number & service history.
As for software updates, dealers will only update the software under warranty, under certain specific conditions. Have a look
here.
Otherwise, you will have to pay for any Progman update you would like, which the dealer feels does not meet the warranty criteria.
