Could this be the torque converter deliberately slipping to give a smooth launch?
My 320D auto revs climb very quickly to about 2000 before the car moves much in 1st or 2nd, then the speed seems to catch up and all hell breaks loose [Probably not as much hell as a 335D though]. Its as though you were slipping the clutch on a manual.
