I haven't driven an E90 or E92 323 with steptronic. However I have driven an E90 323 manual around the back roads of Mt Tamborine and it seemed pretty responsive. So if you were going to choose the E92 323 definately get the manual 323 if you want the sportier/more lively drive between the two.
