4x4's go a long way in keeping your car straight in the snow. When you are not straight they can keep your steering angle much better than most and they are much more predictable. I have driven all biases in the snow and 4wd is hands down the best. For the less skilled its a double edged sword, 4x4's keep a lot out of trouble but also get a lot of people into it. I grew up driving in snow country and yes suv's are more prevalent in ditches, but that isn't 4wd's fault.

btw.. studs are best for ice.
