I'm curious to know if XDrive can be dialed down (or off???) like the STi.

I chose the XI for the 4-5 times a year that it snows hard in Toronto. The XDrive is not like Quattro or the Subie system. It does shut off at high speeds.

XDrive has really improved over the past couple of years with the help of more powerful electronics.

The advantages of full mechanical systems like Quattro are largely negated now. Plus you get the fuel economy advantages of a part time system like XDrive.

In the end, it is just some measure of security for a daily driver for me and I will still get good snows. I drove my E36 M3 around in the snow with good snow tires and some days, I wished I didn't leave home.
