I think you will have to put the plate on retention with your local licencing office and then apply to re-register the car. You will need to take all the documents with you. I am pretty sure to re-register a vehicle it must be road worthy so is it MOT'd? If not you may have to get this done before you re-register rather than before you sell.

The dvla office will issue you with there next available 'age related' plate which will have the same prefix as the original (ie a T reg)

The V5 will then arrive back correctly registered - a note will be made that the car is re-registered and if anybody HPi checks the vehicle this will be notified then.

Also if you do have to MOT before re-registration, be sure to return back to the MOT centre to get it stamped as re-registered otherwise the MOT will show the old 'private' reg plate.

I think it costs £80 to put a plate on retention and then another 80 to re register again.

Not 100% sure how accurate all that is and things may have changed!!
