The Audi V6 TDi of 313bhp and above runs a speaker in the exhaust, that's why its sounds more 'meaty'. Its also a V6 rather than a straight 6 so there might be an audible note there too.
Think of whats in the SQ5 for example. It runs two 'active sound modules'. located close to the tail pipes.
Basically its like ASD that BMW use but the speaker is located outside the car.
VW GT TDis have them as an option too., much like the M Performance Active sound exhaust.
