Worldwide production numbers are not that different between M roadster and coupe, actually, despite what is often claimed here. It's 4507 for the coupe against 5239 for the roadster (source: bmw m registry website).
I agree that the love-or-hate, and fairly unique, design are in its favor. But I'm arguably also a part of the "cult", so probably biased as hell.
