It was expected.

The 50i in the new X5 and X7 was intended as an interim engine for launch until the M50i engine was ready which is they kept the xDrive50i designation. There was always an intention to have a M Performance engine in all vehicle lines and also due to the X5 moving to CLAR platform so quickly in 5 years compared to standard 7. There's no sense to offer 3 engines options, especially 2 V8's.

Decision had nothing to do with XB7 offering.

Both the G05 X5 and G07 X7 xDrive50i will replace their launch version of N63 (456hp) with the same new 530hp engine and become X5/X7 M50i. Here's finally your explanation why they were sticking with "xDrive50i": "M50i" was reserved for the more powerful engine.
