It was a sad day after I got rid of my E46 ZHP, too. The E9X M3 is a very natural progression from that car though. Same balanced package, smooth and linear power delivery, and the manual gearbox feels exactly the same; the new M3 just has a lot more power.
You're in a better situation than I was. My plan was to keep my ZHP until the second model year of the new M3 came out. A drunk driver in a truck with no insurance had other plans, however. So, I've been BMW-less for almost two years while I wait. Only two more months though, so it's all good.
