TBH, I haven't used it yet. Likely this summer with getting out with my 4-wheeler. Holding it, it feels just a bit flimsy as you say, but not bad. I'm not familiar with the rubber belt you describe, but have heard that it doesn't stay in the plug socket very well. Curt may have added a retention belt because of it.
