Trek is good, I have a Trek 2.3, but shop for the components that you want (Shimano 105 is a good place to start, and the reason I ended up with the 2.3). Giant, Specialized, Trek, etc are good brands to start with because you get good gear for reasonable prices because of their buying power.
The Cannondale CAAD series bike are well reviewed too, and availiable at some REI stores (sometimes you can take advantage of sales there).
