There's what the manual says about it. That's all that's required.
Now, I went a step further, as I do extra in an attempt to set up my cars for long-term ownership. I believe if you take care of your cars, they take care of you.
So for the first 1,200 miles, I also used continuously varying RPM's and speeds. Absolutely no cruise control.
Then at 1,200 miles, I followed what BMW does for true M vehicles (which the M50i is not) and did an additional discretionary oil and filter change, and change rear differential fluid. This is not required, and not included in BMW service, so I had to pay for it.
Was this extra required? No. Will it result in more long-term smooth vehicle operation down the road? Unknown, but I hope so. Certainly can't hurt, and absolute worst case, I'm out the cost of the 1,200 mile changes and patience up to that point. A price I'm willing to pay.
