Just a thought, but you mentioned that the vehicle was bought second hand. As the transmission 'learns' the driving habits it adapts the gear changes to suit ie conservative or aggressive. You can reset it and I do this regularly as it annoys me to find myself in the wrong gear before I overtake (I tend to drive fairly conservative).
Perhaps you can do this and see what results?
