Classic low-speed brake dive rear-ender where the rear car hits in the soft part of the grill/hood above the bumper and the front car (i3 in this case) takes the impact in the bumper, which is designed to take the impact. Remember those pesky European pedestrian-impact regulations...

Plus, the OP was alluding to the safety of the battery related to undercarriage penetration of the battery case by road debris. I'll point out while there have been three reported incidents of EV fires with the Tesla S caused by road debris, none have been reported with the Volt. Let's hope the i3 sides with the Volt rather than the Tesla...
