It's kind of a grey area... you might get different answers from different dealers, but generally, 2 or 3 hundred miles + or - either side of 1200. I live 3 hours away from my dealer and had to take it back at around 650 for an electronic issue. They had to keep it for a few days waiting for a part. They felt bad for me living as far away as I do so they wanted to do the 1200 mile service while they had it there to save me from another trip. They said they normally couldn't do it for a few hundred more miles but under the circumstances they would see if they could do it. They had to get special permission from BMWNA to do it, but they did it. They know that I will be changing the oil myself a time or two in between their changes, don't know if that affected their decision... probably not.
