I would think the loss on the trade, coupled with the cost of the new vehicle and the premium for the diesel engine along with diesel costing more, that it would take a good 10-20 years to recoup the difference.
Simply, diesel cost 10-20% more and that is about the increase in MPG you can expect so this alone is a wash.
However, I would consider diesel if range or torque for towing is a requirement.
