I don't agree with the waxing in straight lines. You only get swirls if you wax without getting your car VERY clean first. For the record, I tried waxing in straight lines and I got straight "swirls" instead of circular ones. Which is worse?

The reason you wax in circles is so that you completely work the wax into all the voids on the paint. It is just the most efficient way to do that. The "application" step of waxing is the most important part. I agree that you can do this by going in straight lines too, but it is harder to completely work the wax into the paint evenly when you go back and forth.

If you use a good quality wax and good quality applicator and buffing cloth, it will fill most "swirls" anyway. That's what the wax is for, to fill voids in the paint that detract from it's shininess.
