Makes no sense.

I could see 5% higher... so reading 2.75 mph higher if actual speed is 55 mph etc.

So if I'm going 5 mph, I'm actually going 5.25 mph.
And if I'm going 40 mph... I'm actually going 42 mph. Etc.
Use 5 MPH and you'll never get in trouble with the police. You know, just like BMW intends. Just like the 'ding' when the thermometer hits 37 degrees.

At low speeds in 25 and 30 MPH zones, shame on you if you're doing 50+, the only way you'd get a ticket on local streets anyway, but you can subtract 3 MPH if it makes you happy. I don't bother.

At high speeds, when the speedo says you're doing 80, you're doing 75. If you want to drive 80, step on the gas until the speedo says 85. Or let BMW's psychological coaxing do the right thing and keep your speed down. No need to rush in a gigantic truck. This isn't a 4 Series.
