As soon as I saw Aston Martin mounting no inters on Alonso's car I said aloud: "Nooooo!". But, true, it was a gamble. Imagine that it had only been a brief rain shower and subsequently the racing line drying up: then Aston Martin could have proved all others wrong - Alonso is also very good in the rain. But during this race the skies looked menacing enough to opt for inters.
Remember Lando Norris during the 2021 Russian GP (Sochi): the victory slipped out of his hands in the final laps because of refraining to fit inters. Late rain. Mercedes decided to pit Hamilton for inters. Norris stayed out on slicks, thinking that he could finish the 4 final laps with those. Rain intensified: Norris was toast and Hamilton won the race.
