Yes - one can be active and be fat.
If one looks at how many calories one consumes in a hard 1.5 hour workout one can see that it won't make up for a 22.5 hour sedentary life.
There were days that I went to the gym, worked out hard, did an hour of hard cardio, and for the sole reason that was all I did, I didn't burn as many calories as needed to keep my body in check or lose weight.
Therefore, one can be fat and still be "active"
