You might need to drive the car more with longer trips, assuming there is not some other abnormality with the ecu. 3500 mi in 9 mos figures out to about 390mi per month. If that is because you're doing very short trips with the oil never fully warming up, the ecu treats that as severe service. As part of the system your BMW has an oil condition sensor in the sump. Severe service will build up acids and fuel dilution in the oil that will be recognized by the sensor.
