1. Disconnect negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket/rachet. DON'T CLOSE THE TRUNK!

2. Grab a T20 Screwdriver (or if you don't have one something similar) and push straight through the hole on the left side of the steering wheel and push in the retaining spring (it will provide resistance) while also pulling up on the left side of the airbag. It might take a few seconds but you'll be able to pop the airbag out on the left side (compared to E46, 100x easier). Repeat for right side.

3. Now you will see the airbag connector at the back. Using a flat-head, push the connector down until you can pop it out. Put the airbag carefully aside.

4. Using your T20 Screwdriver/bit, remove the two bolts holding the steering wheel trim piece in.

5. Using your T20 Screwdriver/bit, remove the single bolt at the back, lower portion of the steering wheel holding on the steering wheel trim. Carefully remove the steering wheel trim (pull up and out).

6. Ok, now for the 'fun' part. Place your steering wheel trim upside down on a flat, protected surface and prepare to remove the six little (evil) metal retainers. I found it easiest to use a razor blade to get them started by wiggling it back and forth. Then follow with a small eyeglass flat-head screwdriver and a pocket flat-head to get them all the way off. Do this for all of them until the trim is loose, and then remove the inner trim from the outer (pull up and out).

7. Now that you got those dang metal retainers off, put your new fancy carbon trim insert into the outer trim portion. Time to put those metal retainers back in! First, use a small hammer to flatten the bottom edge down again. Now, you will have to use some pressure with your fingers to get them started back onto the trim prongs. Next, use a 5mm 1/4 socket to put over the metal retainers, and again use your little hammer to hit them down until they are all the way on. Congrats, the new carbon trim is on and secure!

Installation is the reverse of removal. Don't forget to clip the airbag connector back in! And to put the airbag back on just use your hands and put pressure evenly on the airbag until it pops back in. Congratulations, your interior just became even more expensive!

photos removed. any help?
