To answer your original question though there is a lot of internal technology that has improved over the years. Not sure if I saw it on Top Gear or some other show, but the latest engineering behind the fins and waves and everything inside is crazy. The performance gain from a new muffler is not just better air flow (bigger pipe) but it creates a vortex or vacuum or something and actually pulls gas through like a tornado.
