I'm pretty sure it's strictly timed 1-2 seconds. It sure seems it to me. It is a nice feature. I've had several cars that had it and at first I thought, "this is really unnecessary." Then I drove my old Miata and stalled it on the first 5 hill starts. That sold me on the feature.
