In my humble opinion,
M will eventually be making hybrids for max performance. The i8 is the future. Not the other way around. Don't forget that i8 was developed by BMW top engineers, including those from M division.
Somewhere in the depths of the interwebs, a photo was posted of some obscure parts on the i8 that have an M stamp on them. BMW did exactly what they wanted with this car, they gave it a dual personality like no other car has this side of a Porsche 918.
If the P1, 918, or The TheFerrari are of any indication, it's a formula for extreme performance that you can't get with an ICE power plant alone.
It will be more performance, less efficiency oriented than the i8, of course. BMW won't mess with the i8 but the tech and performance implications are there for M to implement into a newly developed vehicle (not an M i8) that will blow our socks off.
