I can say that, if you are lucky, and this is the most clueless person you see on the track, you have been very very lucky.

I've seen much worse. And many pro drivers have crashed JUST like this. Randy Pobst once took a GT-R on a "I believe I can fly" incident because he forgot which turn he was in. It DOES happen to the best of us. If it doesn't, then you aren't driving the car 10/10ths. If you do, I promise you this will happen to you someday (I don't, I'm mostly at 8/10ths because I have eaten armco for dinner before).
